Brent Registration and Nationality Service 020 8937 1010
Congratulations if you and your partner have decided to enter into a civil partnership. Our service aims to make the process as easy as possible, while ensuring the registration or ceremony of your civil partnership is happy and memorable.
Booking a date
The first step is to choose your partnership date. It can be provisionally booked (up to 12 months in advance), or when you come in to give your notice. Book by contacting our register office.
Giving notice
Each partner needs to give legal notice of their intended partnership to the local authority where they live. They must both have lived at their current address for at least seven days before giving notice. If you live in Brent you need to make an appointment on 202 8937 1010.
They need to produce their passport and proof of residence, for example a utility bill, council tax bill or bank statement. If either person has previously been married, or was in another partnership, they must produce evidence of its termination.
Notices of civil partnerships are displayed publicly for 15 clear days. After this the partnership can take place on the 16th day in any local authority, regardless of where the couple live.
If you are a foreign national wishing to join in civil partnership, you must have permission from the Home Office. Call 020 8937 1010 for advice.
The ceremony
A civil partnership only needs to be registered in the presence of an authorised civil partnership officer and two witnesses.
But for those who wish to celebrate the occasion with family and friends, we can advise on suitable wording for a ceremony as well as music and poems.

Fees
The fees for civil partnerships are the same as for marriage. Currently £30 is paid by each person giving notice of their intention to enter a civil partnership. To register the partnership at Brent Register Office costs between £90 and £185. Call 020 8937 1010.
Change of name
You are legally entitled to take your civil partner's surname. If you wish to change your name in any other way you should do so by Deed Poll.
You must notify all UK organisations and the relevant government departments after you've changed name so their records can be amended. The New Name kit contains a database of UK organisations and automatically generates letters with your change of personal details, just print and send.
