On this course you will:

    • Use source material to develop sketches and ideas into designs suitable for making into leaded panels
    • Learn how to cut glass safely and use a variety of stained glass tools effectively
    • Learn how to use frits creatively to add texture and colour to glass
    • Learn how to assemble a stained glass panel using leading, soldering and cementing
    • Explore stained glass as a creative medium
    • This course is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some experience in making stained glass, or in art and design.

Teaching, Learning & Assessment methods for this course:

An initial assessment will help the tutor to gauge your starting point and to plan how best to support you. Your progress will be reviewed in one-to-one talks, by tutor observation and self-assessment. You will learn by practical experience, demonstration, individual & group work. You will have the opportunity to take part in group discussions and your group may be able to show completed work in the Centre at the end of the course.

By the end of the course you should be able to do the following:

    • Take inspiration from source material and translate sketches and ideas into a stained glass design
    • Select glass and lead appropriate for the design
    • Apply glass enamels to the glass pieces using traditional techniques
    • Bring texture and colour into the glass pieces using frits and fusing
    • Cut and assemble glass and lead using various stained glass techniques
    • Produce a stained glass panel with surface decoration in painting, frits and fusing
    • Understand and adopt safe methods of working


Materials you will need for the course, and estimated costs:
    • A sketchpad and pencils.
    • You will need to supply your own choice of glass and lead, and bring enough solder to work with. The tutor will discuss material costs and requirements at the first session.
    • Later in the course you will need to bring an old toothbrush, rubber gloves and a wooden board which is a little larger than your panel.

    • BTEC Art & Design
    • Foundation Course in Art & Design

Extra study/practice you are expected to do independently
Optional: to keep a sketchbook to take notes, jot down ideas, make sketches for finished designs. It is also advisable to visit Galleries and Museums both for enjoyment, to get ideas and to enrich your learning on the course.

Women and men (or unwaged partner) in receipt of means tested benefit e.g. Income Support or Jobseekers Allowance, some Family Credit, or Invalidity Benefit. You will need to show evidence such as an order or benefit book or a Benefits Agency Certificate.
Exam/Other
Accreditation costs (non-refundable, payable at enrolment). Women and men (or unwaged partner) in receipt of an income related benefit only pay 50% of accreditation costs. The maximum you will contribute is £50.
