On this course you will:
    • Begin to work independently
    • Combine techniques to good effect
    • Learn the different techniques used in glass fusing, slumping and simple casting
    • Design and make glass pieces using the combined techniques of fusing, slumping, mould making and casting.
    • Design and make an artwork from fused glass, and using slumping or casting where appropriate


Teaching, Learning & Assessment methods for this course:
An initial assessment will help the tutor to gauge your starting point and to plan
how best to support you. Your progress will be reviewed in one to one talks, by tutor observation and self-assessment. You will have the opportunity to take part in group discussions and your group may be able to show completed work in the Centre at the end of the course.
You will learn by practical experience, demonstration, individual & group work.


By the end of the course you should be able to do the following:
    • Be confident in cutting and breaking glass according to your design, including circles and deep curves
    • Design and make your own glass pieces using fusing, slumping and casting and choose appropriate glass for your individual artwork
    • Recognise the differences between various glasses
    • Understand the kiln processes and temperature profiles involved in fusing, slumping and basic casting
    • Experiment with creating open moulds in plaster
    • Use safe working practices in the studio

Materials you will need for the course, and estimated costs:
A notepad/sketchbook and pencil. You will need to buy special fusing glass and related materials – glass costs approximately £1.20 for a 10X10 cm square. At the first session, the tutor will supply a list of suppliers and an estimate of costs. You might want to bring an overall or apron to protect your clothing.


After this course you could go on to:
    • Ceramics
    • Digital Photography with Photoshop
    • Introductory Award in Business for Creative Industries – NCFE Level 3
    • Art & Design – Pre-Access Programme


Extra study/practise you are expected to do independently
Optional - to keep a sketchbook to take notes, jot down ideas, make sketches for finished paintings. It is also advisable to visit Galleries and Museums both for enjoyment, to get ideas and to enrich your learning on the course.

Women and men (or unwaged partner) in receipt of means tested benefit e.g. Income Support or Jobseekers Allowance, some Family Credit, or Invalidity Benefit. You will need to show evidence such as an order or benefit book or a Benefits Agency Certificate.
Exam/Other
Accreditation costs (non-refundable, payable at enrolment). Women and men (or unwaged partner) in receipt of an income related benefit only pay 50% of accreditation costs. The maximum you will contribute is £50.
