Learner Support Statement

LEARNER SUPPORT STATEMENT

Childcare Support

We have crèches for children up to five at:
        • Stonebridge Centre
        • Harlesden Centre
        • Ashley Gardens
        • Carlton Centre

BACES has four OfSTED approved crèches for learners’ children who are not old enough for school. This service is free and we only ask you to pay a contribution of £5 a term for refreshments per class for each child. If you attend several classes, the maximum charge is £15 for each child for the term.

If you are in receipt of a Means Tested Benefit these charges will reduce to £2 and £6 consecutively. You will be required to show evidence for the reduced rate, e.g.: letter, bank statement, payment book, etc.

Note: Parents are advised to settle their children in crèche.

Financial Support
    • Learners on income related benefits are entitled to fee concessions; if this applies to you then you pay no tuition fee on accredited courses and a reduced tuition fee on non-accredited courses. If your course is accredited, 50% of your exam fees will be paid from BACES’ Access Fund. The maximum you would need to pay is £50 per course.
    • Learners on low income – those whose household income is similar to those on benefit, can be helped from BACES Hardship fund. If you think this could apply to you, ask reception staff for an application form.
For further information see Costs & Help with Costs.
    • ESOL students who have a household income of less than £15k or who have no family support are also entitled to fee concessions.
    Information & Advice Support

      • It is important that your course offers what you want at a level, which is right for you.
      • Course information sheets give you information about the courses – what you need to know before you start, what the course covers, what it can lead to and how much it costs. So before you enrol, read the course information sheet – you can get this from reception staff or on BACES website.
      • Attend the pre-course information meeting or interview where these are offered.
      • Talk to a member of staff who will direct you to someone who can help

    Study Support

Is there anything, which would make it easier for you to study?
        • You can use the computers in the Learning Resource Centres (LRCs) for your course work.
        • There is a Learning Support Worker (LSW) based in each of the LRCs who can help you with ways of tackling your course work.
        • The LSW can also give you additional support with your literacy, numeracy or language. This may be very useful if, for example, you are coming back to studying for the first time after a long break.
        • You can join classes to help you with English, if it is not your first language (ESOL) or with your Maths or written English. Ask at reception for details of how to join these classes – you will have an interview and an assessment to put you in the class which best meets your needs.
        • Brent Library Service offers a wide range of resources to support learners. Borrowers have access to books, language tapes, CDs, DVDs and videos. All Brent libraries have free computers with Internet access available for public use.

      Support for Learners with Disabilities

We offer a wide range of courses for students with learning difficulties and we encourage learners with physical disabilities to join any of the courses in the programme. We have our Disabilities and Learning Difficulties Team to help meet your support needs and access courses. Contact Rebecca Crossley or Debora Pierre at Madison House for further information and help. BACES disabilities statement gives further information about BACES provision for learners with disabilities.
