Holocaust Memorial Day
The Black experience in Nazi Germany and wartime Europe by Akin Shenbanjo Jr.
Thursday 26 January 7pm to 9pm in Willesden Green Library Centre
As an extra event that forms part of Brent Holocaust Memeorial Day, freelance writer and Brent resident Akin Shenbanjo Jr. tells the story of Black Germans' perilous existence under Nazi rule alongside the indignities of institutional racism within the US and French colonial forces.
What happened at Brent Holocaust Memorial Day 2012?
Commemorating victims of the Holocaust and other genocides the 2012 memorial day will be in the Paul Daisley Hall, Brent Town Hall, Forty Lane, Wembley, HA9 9HD on Sunday 22 January 2012 from 11am to 12noon.
- 11am - Welcome by The Worshipful Mayor of Brent, Councillor Aslam Choudry
- 11.05am - Introduction by Gareth Daniel, Chief Executive, Brent Council
- 11.10am - Lighting of the memorial candles by members of Brent Youth Parliament
- 11.15am - Rwandan survivor, Ndiho Sean Obedih Speaks up about his experience during the Rwandan genocide
- 11.25am - The London Cantorial Singers perform 'Schoch'nei votei Chomer'
- 11.30am - A performance poem by Adisa the verbaliser
- 11.35am - A talk by Frank Dabba Smith about Ernst Leitz of Wetzlar: A German Industrialist Helps the Persecuted During the Holocaust
- 11.45am - Memorial prayer in Hebrew and English led by Reverend Anthony Wolfson, accompanied by The London Cantorial Singers. Followed by a one minute silence
- 11.55am - Performance of 'Viva La Libertad' by Kensal Rise Primary School Ethnic Contemporary Classical Orchestra
- 12noon - Close
- 12noon to 12.30pm - Tea, coffee and viewing of exhibitions
