Information for older people

Activities for older people
A wide range of free activities are available for older people in the borough, from health walks in Brent's glorious parks and open spaces to free swimming - there is an activity for all the over 50s living and working in Brent.

Adult education courses
We are committed to providing lifelong education opportunities for our residents to encourage as many people as possible to continue to learn. Brent Adult and Community Education Service (BACES) provides the borough's adult education opportunities.

Two ladies at Brent Town HallThe alarm service is available to anyone who feels they may be unsafe in their own home because of age, disability, isolation, illness or vulnerability. It is a special alarm unit that is connected to the telephone line. The alarm unit has a built in button which you press to obtain assistance. The alarm can also be activated by a remote pendant which is worn around the neck or on a wrist band.

Assessment for support
Should you require a care help and before we can arrange services for you, you need to have an assessment. An assessment involves you and a trained member of our staff. You may also want to involve someone who looks after you or someone to speak for you. The assessment can also include other people, such as your GP.

Blue badge
The blue badge scheme provides a national arrangement of parking concessions for people with severe walking difficulties who travel either as drivers or passengers.

Day care
We have day care to promote choice and wellbeing for older people with complex needs, support family carers, minimise avoidable admission to long-term care or hospital and help promote effective rehabilitation and recovery.

Direct payments
A direct payment is money we can pay directly to you if you have been assessed as needing support. This is used to arrange your own care instead of Social services providing it for you.

Help leaving hospital

If you are going into hospital you may need help when you return home. If requested, a Social Worker from Housing and Community Care Services will see what help you need and discuss with you what services can be provided. Learn further details in our page on help leaving hospital.

Keep warm in winter
More people get ill in winter and the number of deaths rises. There is a direct link between cold weather and the higher death rate, especially amongst older people and others in at-risk groups.

Meals on wheels
Meals on wheels are provided to people who are unable to either cook a daily nutritional hot meal for themselves or obtain this in any other way.

Mental Capacity Act

The Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA) came into force in April 2007 in England and Wales for people 16 years of age and over. It covers all sorts of major decisions - where a person may lack the capacity to decide for themselves.

Re-ablement

We have introduced a re-ablement service to help you re-gain independence as soon as possible after an accident, hospital stay or other change in circumstances. Our aim is to give people the opportunity and confidence to relearn and regain some skills they may have lost, so they can carry out daily living tasks in their own homes.
