Keeping yourself safe
By taking a few simple precautions you can keep yourself safe when in public places and protect yourself from becoming a victim of crime.
What should I do to keep safe?
- keep your handbag or backpack zipped at all times
- if you carry a handbag, keep your purse at the bottom
- never keep your wallet or mobile phone in your back pocket
- don't advertise your valuables - keep them out of sight
- know where your belongings are at all times
- cover up any expensive jewellery and, if you must carry other valuables, be discreet
- avoid carrying around large amounts of cash
- when at a bar or a restaurant keep your belongings safe. Keep bags where you can see them but out of reach of passers by
- if you use your mobile phone on the street be aware of your surroundings while you're on the phone and after your call has ended
- spread your possessions about - keep your mobile phone separate from your purse, and your keys separate from your credit card
- take care when using cash dispensers - don't let people see your PIN number as you enter it. If in doubt, wait until they go away or take your card elsewhere
- avoid using your mobile phone transport hubs or as you leave train stations
Travelling safely
Using cabs
Use Transport for London's Cabwise service to get the numbers of one taxi and two licensed minicabs, in your area, sent directly to your phone.
- Always use a licensed cab firm or use a licensed black cab
- Don't accept a ride from a minicab driver on the street
- Check that the minicab driver knows your name and destination. Always sit in the back and carry a mobile phone.
The Mayor and Transport for London have joined forces to provide a single number for booking a black cab. You can do this by simply calling 0871 871 8710.
