 Vision
The corporate strategy 2006-2010 highlights Brent Council’s vision, values and priorities for the next four years. It sets out the key issues to be tackled and the council’s commitment to building a better borough for all.

Brent will be a great place to live and to visit. We want residents to feel this is their permanent home; safe, clean, and green. Residents will care for their environment; enjoy where they live and what the borough offers. Brent will be a prosperous and healthy place with opportunities for all. Employment and incomes will be higher than the London average and businesses will prosper. The community will be strengthened and be more inclusive. Services will respond to the needs of young and old. Brent Council will show the way with strong civic leadership, which is democratically accountable and represents residents’ interests.

Brent is a very diverse place and this offers residents and the borough great opportunities. We will enable residents to fulfil their potential and contribute to making the borough a better place that reflects their wishes.

 Values
Picture of a customer being helped.Providing excellent services
We are committed to providing excellent, publicly accountable services that give real value for money.

The council is a customer-focused body which is committed to improving customer service standards and customer satisfaction. We will work with partners in the public, private and voluntary sectors to deliver the best value for money.

Improving quality of life
We will improve the opportunities available toresidents and reduce the disadvantages experienced by the most vulnerable people in our communities.

Our duty to promote the social, economic and environmental well-being of all communities will underpin our approach to developing policy and service planning. Regeneration strategies will maximise incomes, especially for those households receiving benefits and in low-paid employment.

Services will recognise the diversity of local communities and all service users will be treated with sensitivity and respect. We will celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the borough and promote tolerance, understanding and community cohesion.

All communities will be able to participate in local decision-making.

Investing in our capacity
We need a workforce that is highly skilled and flexible in the way it develops services. We will support councillors to fulfil their community leadership role and participate in effective decision-making.

We will be an open, outward-looking and professional organization which invests in its staff and technology.

 Priorities
Picture of the streets being kept clean. The council’s corporate strategy has been developed in line with the community strategy commitments and is designed to improve service excellence, urban regeneration and community cohesion. It is focused on enhancing the quality of life for everyone who lives or works in Brent. The priority areas are creating a safer, cleaner and livelier place; a borough of opportunity and one community.

The council is committed to keeping council tax levels below the average for London boroughs and ensuring that local tax payers are receiving value for money. To achieve our dual aims of excellent services within our budget we will explore all options for improving our efficiency and effectiveness.

A safer, cleaner and livelier place
To achieve this we will:
  • improve and extend schemes to tackle environmental crime
  • set tough time targets to deal with reported incidents of environmental crime and if necessary use our enforcement powers to prosecute offenders and deter future offences
  • maximise CCTV use and develop partnership strategies with the police to deal with crime and antisocial behaviour
  • widen the warden services we provide
  • continue to make the borough cleaner through the Big Brent Clean-up campaign
  • work with communities to put in place alley-gating schemes and environmental improvement projects
  • Picture of a park in Brent.have a dedicated StreetCare officer in each ward to monitor and respond to environmental concerns raised by residents
  • aim to be recycling 30 per cent of all the waste collected in the borough by 2010
  • raise the standards of provision for playground and youth facilities in parks and improve access to open spaces across Brent
  • continue to modernise the library service and reflect the information and leisure needs of our communities
  • through new communication services
  • ensure that the redevelopment of Wembley brings maximum social and economic benefits to local residents including employment, new retail outlets, sports facilities and housing
  • develop a programme of activities to ensure local people benefit from the 2012 Olympics and a tourism strategy that balances economic needs with those of local residents.

A borough of opportunity
We will:
  • equip Brent residents with the right skills and experience to access local job opportunities
  • reduce deprivation and rejuvenate our priority neighbourhoods
  • support people to gain the skills and employment which will secure their long-term prosperity and well-being
  • Picture of people in a class.increase the growth of enterprise and encourage an environment for inward investment and business growth
  • continue to work closely with local businesses to identify their needs, improving access to business advice, support and finance
  • work closely with the Brent tPCT, health care providers and the community to reduce health inequalities in the areas of greatest need
  • work with health partners to improve the overall level of public health of all of our residents
  • support local people to make healthier life choices, through programmes to reduce smoking, promote healthy eating and to take part in physical activities.

One community
We will:
  • maintain the supply of affordable new housing and achieve our targets for reducing the use of temporary homes for families with children
  • Picture of some children in a line.continue the programmes to bring more empty properties back into use
  • work with private landlords to provide high quality rented accommodation
  • implement the Children and Young People’s Plan – an ambitious partnership programme designed to improve the quality of life experience by children in Brent

  • continue to treat residents’ views and preferences as the test of how the council makes its decisions.
