Graduate and registered teacher programme

The graduate and registered teacher programmes (GRTP) are employment-based routes to qualified teacher status (QTS).

The programmes are intended to provide training opportunities for graduates for whom a traditional course of initial teacher training (ITT) may not be readily accessible.

The programme is particularly suitable for those who have relevant experience in an education setting for example, further education teaching, classroom support role or independent school teaching.

Under the GRTP people who have a first degree but do not have QTS may be authorised by the Training and Development Agency for schools (TDA) to work as teachers while following an approved training programme designed to enable them to attain QTS.

Brent LEA works in partnership with two consortia providing training and support for candidates in Brent schools.

  • West London Consortium is our main provider for Secondary programmes
  • London North Consortium is our main provider for Primary programmes
