How the council is organised - Council political make-up

Brent has 21 wards that have three councillors (elected members) each.

The current political make-up of Brent is:

  • Labour: 40 elected members
  • Liberal Democrats: 17 elected members
  • Conservatives: 6 elected members

The Council has a Leader who comes from the majority party. The current leader of the council is Councillor Ann John.

The Leader is responsible for forming an Executive which is responsible for implementing the Council's policies.  It is precluded from carrying out certain functions but is responsible for most day to day decisions not taken by officers.

The members also choose a Mayor for Brent each year who promotes Brent locally, nationally and internationally.

The departments that make up Brent Council sit after the political structure.
