Campaigning and events What is a Fairtrade borough?
The purpose of us becoming a Fairtrade borough is to encourage people to 'do their bit' through their purchasing practices to help tackle poverty and demonstrate our solidarity and committment with people around the world to making poverty history.
To ensure Brent gets Fairtrade borough status, we have:
- got Brent Council to pass a resolution supporting Fairtrade, and agree to serve Fairtrade coffee and tea at its meetings and in its offices and canteens
- formed a local steering group (the Brent Fairtrade Network ) that convenes to ensure a continued commitment to Fairtrade borough status
To achieve Fairtrade borough status we are aiming to:
- get a range of Fairtrade products (at least two) to be readily available in a number of Brents shops, local cafes and catering establishments
- get Fairtrade products to be used by a number of local work places (estate agents, hairdressers etc) and community organisations (churches, schools etc)
- attract popular support and media attention for our 'Make Brent a Fairtrade borough' campaign.
