The eGov Register now provides links to Google Earth for local authority and supplier main office locations.
You need to have the Google Earth program installed on your computer for this feature to work. You can download the free version of Google Earth from http://earth.google.com
Google Earth provides a simulated 3D view of the surface of the Earth based on satellite imagery. Not all areas have the same quality of satellite photographs and Google Earth works most effectively with high resolution images. We try to adjust the Google Earth altitude settings according to the image resolution that is available.
When you click on the eGR Google Earth link you will be asked to download and open a KML file which contains the coordinates of that location. This will start the Google Earth program (if it is not already started) and fly to the location of the main offices for that local authority or supplier.
If you click on the yellow pin icon an info box will be displayed with further information and links for that organisation. The link for Google Maps will open a map in the web browser window. If you prefer to have this open in an external browser then go to Tools/Options/General and tick the option for "Show results in external web browser".
Google Earth has several options for displaying data from other layers - you might prefer to switch off some of these to improve the clarity.
You can use the mouse to click and drag the image, zoom in & out, change the tilt & orientation and you can enter new address data to fly to different locations.
Some LA examples are Brent, Belfast, Cambridge, Cardiff, Edinburgh or select any LA from the A-Z list.
Some Supplier examples are Google, Lagan, RSe
All local authority offices have been geocoded with latitude and longitude values but supplier offices are only geocoded if requested by the supplier. If the location coordinates for your organisation's main offices are not correct please contact us and request them to be adjusted.
There are details about basic KML files at http://www.brent.gov.uk/egr.nsf/docsbytitle/KML+files
You can use eGR KML files with alternative 3D programs such as NASA World Wind but you may need to zoom in manually.
