Some industries have the potential to cause pollution. The council has the power to control emissions from some of the less polluting industries which are known as 'Part B Installations'. The more polluting industries, which are called 'Part A Installations' are controlled by the Environment Agency.
These types of industries need to get a 'environmental permit' from the council or Environment Agency before they can start working. The 'Part B' type installations mainly have the potential to cause air pollution and include activities such as vehicle re-spraying, furniture manufacture, unloading of petrol etc. Once the council issues a 'environmental permit' to a industry, it also checks them regularly to make sure that they are not polluting the environment. There are charges for environmental permits.
