MPs and MEPs

There are a number of different levels of government that effect local residents and therefore representatives are elected to serve on each of these bodies.

 

Members of Parliament (MP)
These are elected to serve in the national parliament at Westminster. Regular elections are held and the longest period that can pass between elections is five years. It is the current government who decides when the next election will be held.

 

 

Members of the European Parliament (MEP)
A number of MEPs are elected to serve at the European Parliament and the local constituency covers the whole of London. Elections are held every 5 years. Currently there are nine MEP representing London.

 

 

Mayor and Members of the Greater London Assembly
The Mayor of London and members of the assembly are elected to serve for a period of four years on the GLA. The assembly scrutinises the work of the Mayor and agree his proposed budget.
