Councillors are elected by the local residents every four years to represent them on the Council. The borough is split into wards and three Councillors are elected to represent each ward. The next local elections are in 2010.
The roles of Councillors are similar to the roles of MPs in Westminster, with an Executive (or cabinet) running the Council whilst the rest of the Councillors scrutinise their decisions.
Councillors run surgeries where you can meet with the councillors for your ward and discuss any problems you may be experiencing with the council services.
As community leaders they put forward proposals to improve their ward and/or the borough, which may include bringing together different community groups to develop a case for change.
