Household waste and recycling collection strategy consultation

09/02/2010

Throughout September and early October you can have your say on the new household waste and recycling collection strategy from 31 August to 20 October.

How to take part

  • Keep an eye out for local events where you can have your say.
  • Complete the online questionnaire.
  • Fill in the questionnaire in the October 2010 issue of the Brent Magazine.

We are committed to maintaining a weekly waste collection and the detailed plans, which are available to view on the council website, are for an improved and extended service, collecting a greater variety of materials for recycling than at present. Under the proposals organic, garden and food waste will be collected weekly from homes with other items collected on alternate weeks.

Some of the things we would like to do

  • Roll out a more convenient service to flats.
  • Additional materials will also be collected for recycling such as cardboard, mixed plastics and Tetrapak drink/food cartons.
  • Introduce a new communal food waste collection service for suitable blocks of flats.
  • New, larger container to replace the existing green box with more room to recycle.
  • Increase support and advice to reduce the amount of waste we produce. There's also an emphasis on reducing waste.

The strategy promotes repairing items rather then throwing them out and is expected to save around £1 million after the first two years.

The consultation ends on 19 October so please make sure your submission reaches us by then. StreetCare's Waste Policy Team would also welcome professional input via e-mail or by telephone other service units or partner organisations to ensure a joined up approach.  If you have any questions you can contact us.
