Apply for housing

The demand for housing assistance from the council far exceeds the supply of accommodation.

Thousands of households are seeking help with housing.

The supply of properties to let from the council and other social landlords (housing associations) in Brent is limited. It is only enough to meet the needs of a very small proportion of all applicants on the housing register.

Eligibility

In order to qualify for acceptance on the housing register applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • aged 16 or more*
  • not subject to immigration control, i.e. a citizen of the UK, the Commonwealth or the European Economic Area unless granted refugee status or granted leave to enter or remain in the UK

*If you are between the ages of 16 and 18 you will need to provide the council with a suitable guarantor before an offer of accommodation can be made. A guarantor is someone who will agree to pay your rent and other charges if you fail to do so.

If you fall into one or more of the following criteria you cannot qualify to be on the housing register:

  • housed in Brent by another local authority under its obligation to secure temporary accommodation for homeless applicants
  • a council tenant
  • guilty of attacking or threatening housing services staff
  • have a history of anti-social or criminal behaviour relating to housing
  • an ex-tenant of the council or another registered social landlord (housing association) with a history of rent arrears
