Neighbourhood Working

We all want to feel good about our neighbourhood and have a say in making it a better place to live and work. Brent Council's Neighbourhood Working initiative works with local councillors, in their role as community leaders, to find out what concerns you have about your area and how you would like it to be improved.

We believe that councillors, residents, community groups and partners such as the police working together at neighbourhood level can help us to develop better response to local issues, improve neighbourhoods and deliver better services.

Whether you have issues about cleanliness, local transport, parks, health, crime and anti-social behaviour, activities for young people or suggestions about how to improve local services, we want to hear from you.

How we tackle your concerns

Neighbourhood Working operates in every ward in Brent. Every ward has a budget of £20,000 to tackle the top issues of concern. The money is for one-off capital projects. We aim to find new or innovative ways of tackling issues to provide lasting solutions. The money isn't used to substitute for things that should be done anyway.

Not all problems require a financial solution, which is why we take a joined-up approach with our partners to tackle local issues. Some issues are complex and may require a longer-term strategic approach. Neighbourhood working does not address individual concerns such as housing allocations, social services or planning and licensing applications. In such cases you should contact the relevant department, one stop service or your local councillor.

How projects are funded

Projects are prioritised by your local councillors. Councillors can allocate funds at any time although they will often wait to make informed decisions about the full range of issues raised. The number of projects councillors support and amount allocated will depend on a range of factors such as what issues residents consider are the most important, which projects will have the widest community impact and offer the best value for money and whether any additional funding can be raised.
