Local people are being invited to enjoy a spectacular and safe fireworks night - by attending Brent Council's huge display at Roundwood Park on 5 November.

More than 12,000 spectators are expected at the display which is one of only a handful of free large-scale public displays in London.

The council also issued a message today to residents planning their own bonfires and fireworks displays, asking them to use fireworks responsibly and safely.

The use of fireworks is regulated by law. Police will be patrolling Brent to stop their misuse and have the power to issue fixed penalty notices.

Brent Council's Lead Member for Environment, Culture and Planning, Cllr Irwin Van Colle, said: "We promise people will enjoy the spectacular, free display we have planned for Roundwood Park.

"But if you are planning to let off fireworks yourself, please be careful and considerate - make sure that you ‘celebrate not irritate'. Brent Council's aim is for everyone to have an enjoyable and safe time over the fireworks period."

Roundwood Park, in Harlesden Road, NW10, will be open from 6:45pm on November 5. The display starts at 8pm sharp and finishes at 9pm.

Attractions include:

• the Channel One Sound System
• food vendors
• children's rides.

The council has made contingency plans to stage the bonfire in the park on Saturday 7 November if Thursday's event is cancelled due to bad weather.

The council is reminding local people to:
• please use fireworks responsibly and safely and follow the fireworks code
• be considerate of others - fireworks can cause distress especially to the elderly, the very young and animals
• make sure their home is secure before heading out to events
• to take care of their valuables at events.

It is against the law to:

• let off fireworks in a public place
• for under 18s to have fireworks in a public place
• let off fireworks between 11pm and 7am.
