Service user information

Who can receive services?
If you live in a hostel or supported housing scheme, or receive floating support, and:

  •  are elderly
  •  are homeless
  •  have refugee status
  •  need help to live at home
  •  have left domestic violence
  •  are disabled or have special needs,

Your housing support service may be paid for by Brent Council through the Supporting people grant. This grant is paid directly to the organisation that is providing support for you.

How to access services
Referrals at the moment are taken from the Social Services Directorate, Housing, Probation, the Primary Care Trust plus other health professionals, Citizens Advice Bureau, and other non-Statutory Agencies. Self referrals are also accepted. From September 2008 we are gradually introducing a single access route to most supported housing and hostels in Brent.

Floating support
Floating support can help people to live independently or maintain their tenancy through providing housing-related support. Examples of what a floating support service can provide include:

  •  help with accessing benefits or maximising welfare benefits
  •  support to find appropriate agencies for mental health needs
  •  making links with drug and alcohol services in the borough
  •  accessing education, training and employment
  •  support with finding a health service for particular needs
  •  help to sustain a tenancy and support to live independently
  • Brent operates a single access point to all floating support in Brent. If you would like to refer someone for floating support, please see the START project

What support should you expect from your housing support worker (.doc, 42Kb)?
Housing related support services are defined as services that aim to develop or sustain an individual's capacity to live independently in accommodation. Housing related support services are not general health, social care or statutory personal care services, but rather services whose aim is to support more independent living arrangements.

I need to move on from supported housing, a hostel or residential care Home
The Move On scheme will help you to move from supported accommodation into independent accommodation. It could mean moving to local Authority or Registered Social landlord properties or into the private sector accommodation or out of the area.
