How we are combating graffiti
As well as a graffiti removal service we also:
- gather information on offenders by having a database of tags.
A photo is taken before and after every time we remove graffiti. These photos form a photographic database of graffiti tags which is fed to the Police when required.
- use CCTV to catch offenders.
We have successfully used CCTV to inform the Police of graffiti offences. The offenders are usually caught at the scene of the crime by the police and are either given fines or community service.
Brent Council will continue to use CCTV to gather information on graffiti crimes.
- join forces with the Enhanced Community Punishment Teams.
We work with the Enhanced Community Punishment Teams to develop suitable reparation and community service work for young and older offenders respectively.
Offenders carry out community service work on some of Brent's bridges and large surface areas. The work involves removing graffiti and decorating. In this way the offenders provide a beneficial service to the local community and become aware of how time consuming it can be to remove graffiti.
- sponsor aerosol art murals.
Whilst we are determined to wipe out illegal graffiti, we are aware that some street artists show great artistic talent. We have sponsored a number of community arts projects. We have been really impressed with the quality of the artwork that has been produced by young people and will continue to sponsor similar projects.
This building in Wembley was covered in graffiti which was designed and spray painted by young people from Wembley High School under the guidance of Kamala Arts.
