General policy
Properties built before November 1993 have rubbish bins provided by Brent Council.
The developer or landlord for new developments or flat conversions is responsible for providing their own bins.
All developers must ensure there is adequate waste storage for each property. We have guidance available to help developers assess how much area to put aside for waste storage.
We aim to formalise this guidance in 2008 when our Local Development Framework supplementary guidance is approved.
In the long term Government is looking to recycle as much as 60 per cent of household waste. Developers should provide recycling containers that can capture at least half of all domestic waste arisings.
Bin replacement policies
Change from a 240litre wheelie bin to a 140litre, or change from a 140litre wheelie bin to a 240litre wheelie bin:
You might find that you are recycling so much more that you no longer need a 240litre wheelie bin, and want to free up some space. We can exchange these bins free of charge as long as our waste contractor has a stock of used bins.
We provide used, clean wheelie bins if we exchange free of charge.
We charge for the delivery of completely new bins (that is, if you do not wish to have a used bin). New bins cost £45.12 (price correct October 2006, prices may vary after this date).
Exchange from 240litre wheelie bins to 360litre or bigger:
If you want a larger bin for your property, you must purchase it. We can not accept the difference in price between the two bins.
Stolen or missing wheelie bins/ damaged by contractors
We are obliged to replace all bins that are missing or damaged as a result of our waste contractor's actions. You can report a missing bin to us. The following will take place:
This does not apply to paladin bins. If a palading bin is missing or damaged, then the Housing office or the managing agents of the estate must purchase a new one.
Newly built properties, housing associations and council estates and converted properties
It is the responsibility of the housing association, council housing or private developer or landlord to purchase bins for their properties or managed estates.
Developers and owners of houses that are converted into flats have to purchase wheelie bins for those properties.
Residents who want another bin or want a 360litre,770litre or 1100litre are requested to purchase it.
We do not provide bins free of charge.
Wheelie bins on housing estates
All enquiries regarding bins in housing estates should be referred to your housing office.
StreetCare does not replace bins for our housing offices free of charge.
Fire damaged wheelie bins
We are not responsible for replacing wheelie bins that have been damaged or burnt out by fire. Customers' house insurance should cover the cost. You should purchase the bin from us and then claim it under your insurance policy.
