How to prevent flies and maggots in the green bins

It is common to find flies and maggots in your green organic bin, especially in the hot summer months. However there are steps that you can take to prevent this.

Kitchen scraps wrapped up in newspaperYou can help by wrapping your food waste in one or two sheets of newspaper or placing it in cardboard before you put it into your green organic bin.

This prevents the green organic bin from getting messy and also prevents flies from landing on the food and laying their eggs.

Closing your green organic bin lid properly is especially important during hotter summer months, as it will prevent flies from entering your green organic bin and laying their eggs.

It is advisable to clean your green organic bin a few times a year. By using a long handled broom, hot water and a few drops of detergent. Then rinse with cold water and tip the bin up to drain it.

We advise our residents to line the bottom of their green organic bin once it is clean with cardboard or newspaper to absorb any liquids that may be produced by the organic waste.

Please do not wrap any food waste in plastic bags or biodegradable bags. Plastic bags will contaminate the compost produced and if it is seen in the green organic bin during the collection it will not be emptied and you may have your bin removed.

Biodegradable bags are not accepted as they do not decompose quickly enough during our compost process. Therefore if they are spotted in your green organic bin it may not be emptied and you may have your bin removed.
