Buildings of special architectural or historic interest are listed to protect them from being demolished or spoilt during development.
There are two kinds of listed buildings:
Statutory listed buildings
These are chosen by the Secretary of State for the Department of National Heritage (DNH). No alterations that could affect their special character can be made before listed building consent has been granted by the council. These buildings may be classified as:
Locally listed buildings
Since 1975 the council has held a local list, on which there are currently 234 properties. Included are the thatched cottages in Slough Lane, Kingsbury, and Barham Old Court, Harrow Road, Wembley. These are regarded as having particular local importance. Although these buildings are not legally protected, the list draws attention to their character and importance when they are threatened by development proposals.
