The council provides a fee-paying service for the construction of vehicle crossings to facilitate off street parking. An application form is available online. This provides a large amount of information about footway crossings.
Upon receiving a telephone request, we will send an application form to residents within five working days. When completed application forms are received with the £25 fee; provided the proposed location does not require planning permission and the application complies with our policy, a highway engineer will undertake a site survey to assess whether the location of the proposed crossing is suitable. Where it is suitable, a quotation for installing the crossing will be sent to the applicant.
When payment is received, the application will be added to the council's programme of works for footway crossings by the contractor engaged to carry out these tasks.
For certain roads planning permission has to be obtained before a decision can be made. Check which roads require planning permission. (.pdf, 52Kb)
Please note that your application must also comply with the Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) (amendment) (no.2) (England) Order 2008, which came into effect from 1 October 2008. Planning permission will be required for applications from householders that wish to pave their driveway with an impermeable material exceeding 5m sq or where surface water will not drain into a soakaway within the front garden.
