A pothole is where the surface of the road has been eroded and a hollow has formed. The council has responsibility for the maintenance and repair of the highway.
The factors to be taken into account when assessing the risk include the size and depth of pothole, the traffic type, speed and volume, road alignment and visibility and also the position in relation to road width.
Potholes can also appear on pavements and footways.
