Admissions criteria for schools in Brent
Admissions arrangements for Brent community schools
When there are more applications for Brent community schools than there are places available, pupils are offered places according to the oversubscription criteria listed below.
Children with an education, health and care plan or statement of special educational need (SEN) have priority over other applicants for admission to the school named on their plan or statement. Read more about the school application process for children with SEN.
The oversubscription criteria for entry to Brent community schools in 2017/18 are:
1. Look after or previously looked after children
A ‘looked after child’ or a child who was previously looked after but immediately after being looked after became subject to an adoption, residence, or special guardianship order.
2. Children attending infant school
Children attending an infant school on the same site as a junior school (for applications to junior schools only).
3. Medical or social needs
Special circumstances to do with significant medical needs and or social needs.
4. Children inside the catchment area with brothers or sister at the school
Brothers or sisters of a child who attends the school, or an infant or junior school on the same or adjoining site, living in the catchment area of the school and who will continue to do so on the date of admission.
This includes half and step brothers and sisters and foster children if they live at the same address - but not cousins or other relatives.
Siblings attending the same school should have priority over those attending a separate school on the same site.
5. Staff Children
Children whose parent is a member of staff who has been employed at the school for two or more years.
6. Children inside the catchment area
Children living within the school's catchment area. The catchment area is the defined neighbourhood in which the school is located. It is generally bounded by major roads and/or railway/tube. Read more about catchment areas for Brent schools.
7. Children with brothers or sisters at the school
Brothers or sisters of a child who attends the school, or an infant or junior school on the same or adjoining site, and who will continue to do so on the date of admission.
8. All other children
Any other applicant. Children who do not meet any higher criteria will be considered under this criterion.
Within each criterion priory will be given to applicants living nearest to the school.
The distance from home to school will be measured by straight-line, from a point in the property to a point in the school determined by the grid references for the centre of the school’s postcode.
The measuring system is an integral part of the admission software, uses Ordnance Survey maps and the LLPG (Local Land Property Gazetteer) and is accurate to 1 metre.
