My final message of the year

I just wanted to take the opportunity to wish everyone in Brent a very merry Christmas and a happy and successful New Year.

2012 has certainly not been a quiet year.

We had the wonderful experience of hosting the Olympics, a huge success, and we showcased the best of Brent and the best of British in style at our jubilee celebrations.

But this was against the backdrop of a really tough year for many of us.

The economy still shows no sign of recovering, Government cuts have hit the services we rely on, wages are still frozen and there are precious few signs of light at the end of the tunnel.

But the way the people of Brent have handled these difficult circumstances has been an inspiration to me. I have the honour of meeting dozens of people, from all works of life, and all corners of Brent every day.

These people - you - are truly inspirational.

From people who have dedicated their lives to working for charity, who are tireless in campaigning to improve their communities and who have won an incredible array of awards in every field and discipline, to people who are making huge sacrifices to give their children a better future and who work hard every hour of the day to turn their dreams into a reality.

It is because of you that I am so proud to tell people that I come from Brent.

2012 was also a huge year for me personally.

In May I became the Leader of the council, the greatest honour of my life. It is a privilege to spend every day fighting to improve this area that I love, and to make a difference for the people of Brent that I care so much about.

Have a wonderful Christmas break, I will be writing early in the new year about our plans for 2013.
