The Healthier Catering Commitment is a London award scheme designed to encourage takeaway outlets to consider how they prepare, cook and promote their food to support customers to eat healthier.
The award acknowledges businesses that are actively promoting healthier cooking practices that reduce the level of saturated fat, salt and sugar. With high rates of obesity and type 2 diabetes amongst Brent residents, eating foods high in saturated fat, salt and sugar contributes to these illnesses.
To achieve the award, takeaway stores need to show a range of healthier practices such as using healthier oils (rapeseed, sunflower, corn oil) instead of lard or palm oil, limit salt usage, promote water and low sugar drinks, and consider healthier sides such as salad, sweetcorn or jacket potatoes as an alternative to chips.
Consumers are becoming more aware of healthy eating, and by gaining the award, takeaways could increase customer satisfaction and sales while improving the health of their community.
Don’t be afraid to ask your local takeaway store what type of oil they cook with and encourage them to sign up to the award!
