By-election for three Brent wards announced

A by-election will take place in the Brent electoral wards of Barnhill, Wembley Central and Alperton on Thursday 23 January 2020, as was announced today by Carolyn Downs, Returning Officer and Chief Executive at Brent Council.
This is following the resignation of four Councillors. There are two vacancies in Barnhill, one in Alperton and one in Wembley Central.

Applications to register to vote in order to be eligible for this election must reach the Electoral Registration Officer by midnight on Tuesday, 7 January 2020. Applications can be made online – all you need is five minutes and your National Insurance Number.
You can vote in local elections if you are:
- a British citizen - excluding overseas electors;
- a qualifying Commonwealth citizen (including Cyprus and Malta);
- from Ireland;
- a European Union citizen.
Carolyn Downs, Returning Officer and Chief Executive at Brent Council, said:
“I’d encourage anyone from these wards who is eligible but not yet registered to vote to make sure they do so before the deadline so they can take part in the by-election. It’s your democratic right and an important way you can help shape the future of your local area."
Applications to vote by post or by postal proxy must reach the Electoral Registration Officer at Brent Civic Centre by 5pm on Wednesday, 8 January 2020.
Voters who are unable to attend a polling station also have the option to appoint a proxy to vote on their behalf. Applications by electors wishing to appoint a proxy must reach the Electoral Registration Officer by 5pm on Wednesday, 15 January 2020.
