  • Cllr Lesley Jones MBE, former Mayor of Brent has passed away
  • Thursday’s council election for Willesden Green ward is now suspended
  • The vote for all other wards in Brent will still take place as planned on Thursday

It is with great sadness that we can confirm that Willesden Green Councillor Lesley Jones MBE has died.

Cllr Jones, who had been a councillor in Brent for 20 years, served as Mayor of the borough in 2015-16, when she was also made a MBE in the 2015 Queen's birthday honours list, having been nominated for an award by her residents in recognition of her service to the community and local government.

Cllr Jones said at the time that “Being elected to serve the people of Brent…is an honour in itself, so to receive recognition for doing so is wonderful.”

As is tradition for the Mayor of Brent, Cllr Jones was given the opportunity to select a charity to support during her Mayoral year, and raised £9,359 for Brent Young Carers. The money raised has since been used to provide grants to 18 young carers who are in vulnerable situations, giving them new educational, social and employment opportunities. The money has also enabled the centre to provide trips and activities for young carers to help them develop new skills, as well as giving them a vital break from the day to day stress of caring.

A resident of Dollis Hill, Cllr Jones leaves behind 4 children, 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Willesden Green poll suspended – vote in all other wards STILL TO TAKE PLACE as planned

Cllr Jones was standing for re-election in her constituency of Willesden Green.

Her death means that Thursday’s (3 May) poll in Willesden Green only will now be suspended, and an election for all three seats in that ward will be called in due course - but council elections for all other wards in Brent will still go ahead as scheduled.

All residents in Willesden Green only will be written to today (Monday 30 April 2018) regarding the death of Cllr Jones and the suspension of Thursday’s poll. Notices will also be issued across polling station sites in Willesden Green ward, in the Library at Willesden Green and on social media.

Thursday’s election for all other wards (the remaining twenty out of twenty-one wards) in Brent will still go ahead as scheduled on Thursday 3 May 2018. Polling stations are open at 7am to 10pm.

Tributes to Cllr Jones MBE

Carolyn Downs, Brent Council Chief Executive, led the tributes to the former Mayor. She said:

“It is with great sadness that we received news this morning of the death of Cllr Lesley Jones.

“Her dedication to public life, from her days as a teacher, to a local councillor to Mayor and first citizen of Brent was evident for all to see and so it was only fitting that she was honoured with an MBE in 2015.

“Our thoughts are with her family at this very difficult time.”

The Mayor of Brent, Cllr Bhagwanji Chohan, said:

“Lesley’s death is devastating news and our deepest sympathies go out to her family.

“She was an exceptional public servant and set a wonderful example of how to hold the office of Mayor of Brent with the dignity and respect it deserves.

“She will be sorely missed by everyone at the council.”
