Deadline for Covid-19 business support schemes changed to 28 August 2020

The deadline for businesses across Brent to submit their applications for covid-19 financial support schemes has changed to 5pm, Friday 28 August, after the council sought clarity from the Government over the closure of the schemes.

The government wrote to councils last month to announce the closure of the Retail, Hospitality & Leisure Grants Fund, the Small Business Grants Fund, and the Discretionary Grants Fund - with any cash remaining in the pot after that date then handed back to the government – but has since clarified that businesses have until 5pm, Friday 28 August 2020 to get their applications in.

In Brent, nine out of ten eligible businesses have already claimed their the Small Business Grants Fund or Retail, Hospitality & Leisure Grants Fund payment, totalling £60.585m.

Additional criteria which had been applied to the Discretionary Grants Fund to prioritise the support has also now been relaxed, meaning more businesses are now eligible to apply for a grant. Businesses may also receive an automatic top-up payment on top of the £5,000 initially made available through the discretionary scheme, however this is dependent on the number of eligible claims received and will be confirmed at the end of the month.

So far, over £1m of payments through the Discretionary Grants Fund have been paid or are scheduled to be paid to Brent businesses.

Cllr Shama Tatler, Brent Council’s Cabinet Member responsible for business, said:

“My message to every Brent business couldn’t be clearer, if you are yet to receive any grant to help with the impact of covid-19, even if you think you are not eligible, please check out these schemes on our website and apply before it is too late.
