Brent’s small businesses recognised after local people vote for their favourites

6 December 2017

To coincide with Small Business Saturday, Brent Council organised a competition to find the borough’s best independent retailers.

The winning businesses were recognised at an awards breakfast in Doppio, Wembley High Road on Wednesday.

Small Business Saturday

Speaking at the event Cllr Shama Tatler, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Growth, Employment and Skills said:

“This year’s competition was even bigger and better than last year, with nearly 120 nominations submitted.

“Small businesses do so much for our local community and are the backbone of the wider economy and I’m delighted to be honouring these winning businesses here today.

“With the online and high street giants to compete with, running a small business is no mean feat. These awards show that local people have a real affection for the unique independent businesses we have here in Brent.”

The winning businesses were as follows:

Best Customer Service: Trinidad Roti Shop in Harlesden

Customer Leroy who nominated Trinidad Roti said: “You always feel welcome as you come through the door. One day I lost my wallet and needed to use their phone to cancel my credit card. I made four phone calls while sitting in the shop. I thank Trinidad Roti for their support that day they even offered me a free meal. This act of kindness bought tears to my face.”

Best Online Presence: Wonderland in Wembley

Customer Guy who nominated Wonderland said: “They really understand their customers and go the extra mile to please them. www.wonderland-online.com is really easy to use and there is a lot of great products to choose from.”

Best Newcomer: Reine Noire in Harlesden

Customer Shemola who nominated Reine Noire said: “Reine Noire helped me recently as I had a family event to attend but my delivery from another fashion retailer hadn't arrived. Disappointed and upset I decided to take a walk up Harlesden High Street to try and find a dress for the evening. As I walked into Reine Noire I was over the moon as they had so many dresses in stock all sizes and different varieties of colours I was actually spoilt for choice. I received the best customer service I was assisted to at all times. I will not be shopping online again as I have the perfect fashion retailer to pop into and able to get what I want just like that.”

Most Unique or Special Business: Sparkle O'Hara in Willesden Green

Customer Sally who nominated Sparkle O’Hara said: “First because it is the brightest and most sparkly addition to Willesden Green in the 25 years I have lived here! It really brightens up the area whether you are awed by their fabulous windows on a cold dark November afternoon or inside within its treasure trove of glamour vintage and contemporary style and fabulous fake fur winter coats - all at very affordable prices. I don't shop anywhere else now for clothes or gifts for my girlfriends (fabulous jewellery and 'liberty style scarves too but not at Liberty prices!!). Fiona the owner is warm and welcoming. What you end up buying will be unique and you will feel like a million dollars.”

Most Attractive Shopfront: Tamariz Deli in Harlesden

Customer David who nominated Tamarisz Deli said: “This is a one off shop in Harlesden that brings in customers from out of the immediate area who in turn will use other local shops. The owners also offer assistance to the local community in which they are heavily involved.”
