All eyes on rogue traders - as residents are urged to ‘be wise to being green’

12 December 2021

As part of National Consumer Week, 6 to 12 December, Brent Council and Citizens Advice are advising residents to stay alert and “be wise to being green” by watching out for scammers and rogue traders who offer deals too good to be true.

We want residents to take steps to be more environmentally friendly and invest in making their homes more energy efficient by installing energy technologies, like solar panels, which can benefit the environment.

However, we are also raising awareness of how residents can protect themselves from misleading energy efficiency and environmental claims, such as 'green scams' and cold callers selling eco-friendly tech or gadgets.

Councillor Promise Knight, Cabinet Member for Community Safety & Engagement, said:

“It is unfair and deeply upsetting to be caught out by scammers, so we are asking everyone to stay alert, ask questions, and research the businesses making these offers.

“Keeping residents safe from scammers and rogue traders is a main priority. This kind of deceit has a devastating effect on people, and often leads to them losing hundreds of pounds from fake companies pretending to offer green solutions or energy saving installations in homes.”

By taking the following advice, consumers can arm themselves with the knowledge and confidence they need to make the best decisions.

Stay alert, scammers offer fake grants to get you to commit to having home improvements done, they also use pressure or scare tactics to sell home energy tech you might not need.

Take steps to stay safe, by always doing your research before buying anything. Check the company or website you plan to use and if you are getting home improvements done, make sure you get written quotes and certified schemes to find recommended traders
