New homes and new careers in South Kilburn
15 February 2021
The South Kilburn regeneration project is not only providing residents with high quality new homes, it’s also offering career opportunities.
Nancy Roache, who lives close to Chippenham Gardens, is looking to make her next career move in the construction industry. She recently met the team working on the project as part of a Women Into Construction mentoring programme.
Once completed, the Chippenham Gardens redevelopment will house 52 new homes that are due to be finished by the end of next year. This will include 22 affordable homes for existing South Kilburn council tenants, and a landscaped public square.
“It was so good to see the people involved, in person,” Nancy said after she was taken around the site. “It changed my perception of a construction work force, particularly the considerate and friendly site personnel and their organised working mode. It was a pleasant surprise to find an unexpectedly sophisticated approach to social and humanity care. I feel welcome and less concerned about working in construction now. Such encouragement for us women.”
Higgins Homes is the developer responsible for delivering the Chippenham Gardens project. Amy Ross, head of social value at Higgins, mentored candidates for four weeks as part of the Covid-19 response programme. Following a mock interview, the candidates were allocated mentors. The sessions included career routes, CV advice, skills development and a site visit.
