Government announces Covid-19 business support schemes to close
28 July 2020
Businesses across Brent are being asked to urgently submit their applications for covid-19 financial support schemes, after the Government announced that the schemes will close.
Businesses have until 23:59pm, Sunday 16 August 2020 to get their claims in for the Retail, Hospitality & Leisure Grants Fund, the Small Business Grants Fund, and the Discretionary Grants Fund - with any cash remaining in the pot after that date then handed back to the government.
The Secretary of State for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy, Alok Sharma MP wrote to councils last week to inform them of the closure of the support schemes and the need to hand back any unspent funds.
In Brent 86% of the Small Business Grants Fund, the Retail, Hospitality & Leisure Grants Fund and 91% of the Small Business Grants Fund have been paid.
Additional criteria which had been applied to the Discretionary Grants Fund to prioritise the support has also now been relaxed, meaning more businesses are now eligible to apply for a grant.
Cllr Shama Tatler, Brent Council’s Cabinet Member responsible for business, said:
“These grants have been so important to many businesses across Brent and it is a surprise the government is looking to end the schemes and demand the money back, before everyone has come forward to claim what they are entitled to.
“We’ve been telling people about these grants in every way we can and we now even have a team of officers physically knocking on people’s doors and urging them to claim before the deadline.
“My message to every Brent business couldn’t be clearer, if you are yet to receive any grant to help with the impact of covid-19, even if you think you are not eligible, please check out these schemes on our website and apply before it is too late.
“After 16 August, the money set aside for you which you are entitled to will be gone.”
