Councillor Kana Naheerathan announced as new Mayor of Brent

Brent's new Mayor, Councillor Kana Naheerathan, was elected at the Annual Meeting of Brent Council and officially appointed at the Mayor Making Ceremony last night, Wednesday 4 June 2014.

Councillor Naheerathan is the borough's first ever Mayor from Sri Lanka. He has represented Queensbury ward since 2010 and was the chair of Kingsbury and Kenton area consultative forum from 2010 to 2013. He has lived in Kingsbury for almost 20 years.

He studied at Middlesex University after arriving in the United Kingdom and is an accountant by profession running his own practice in Kingsbury. He is married and has one son who attends school locally.

Councillor Naheerathan, when asked about his priorities as Mayor for the coming year, commented: "I am immensely looking forward to my mayoral year and getting to know many more of the community, voluntary and residents' groups that we have in Brent.

"In the next year I will be an ambassador for Brent and will promote the borough locally and nationally. Brent is a wonderful place and I look forward to doing all I can to support activities that promote the borough and its residents."

The outgoing Mayor, Councillor Bobby Thomas, thanked Brent's new Mayor for his support at the Mayor Making Ceremony and wished him the best for the year. Brent Council Leader Cllr Muhammed Butt thanked the outgoing Mayor for his successful year in the civic office.

The new Deputy Mayor is Councillor Lesley Jones, ward councillor for Willesden Green.
