Supporting women in the workplace on International Women’s Day

5 March 2021

Gender equality at work is the driving force behind three webinars to help support women in male-dominated professions this International Women’s Day.

Brent Works is hosting online workshops run by experts to promote careers for women in construction, the tech industry and the Metropolitan Police on 8 March.

The webinars are part of the council’s commitment to reduce inequality and offer every Brent resident the opportunity to succeed as the borough looks ahead to economic recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cllr Stephens, Lead Member for Education, Business, Employment and Skills, said: “There are some perceived myths surrounding women entering careers in many sectors of our workforce, including in the policing, tech and construction sectors. Our aim is to help remove those obstacles and tackle these misperceptions.

“Brent Council has made it a key strategic priority to give all our residents every opportunity to succeed, and to tackle these sources of inequality. As part of this, to mark International Women’s Day, we want to give women interested in these careers the chance to challenge these myths, hear directly from people in these sectors and achieve their aspirations.”

International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. Brent Council’s Gender Equality Network is also running a series of virtual events between 8-12 March on the theme of ‘Choose to Challenge’.
