New £6m grant scheme for local businesses opens today

27 November 2020

As part of an extended package of support for businesses, the Government has announced a new grant scheme aimed at supporting businesses that do not directly pay business rates but have been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and enforced lockdown.

The Additional Restrictions Grant, which will be administered by the Council and has a total cash limit of £6,595,420 will provide grants to eligible businesses that have been affected but have not been covered by other grant schemes, or where additional funding is needed, this includes businesses that:

  • Have been required to close by COVID-19 regulations

  • May have no choice but to close, e.g. because their customer’s businesses are closed; because essential suppliers are closed

  • Have been severely impacted by the restrictions put in place to control the spread of COVID-19

  • Operate from either commercial or domestic properties

  • Were trading on 4 November 2020

Cllr Shama Tatler, Brent Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Property & Planning and responsible for business said:

“The past month has been difficult for everyone, especially if you’re a small business that had to close your doors and cease trading.

I’m sure that this new grant along with yesterday’s announcement that London is in Tier 2 will be welcomed news for all non-essential businesses in Brent who can reopen and start trading again from the 2 December.

Since March, we have already paid out significant amounts of money to businesses in the borough through the Small Business Grant Fund, the Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Grant Fund and the Discretionary Grant Fund, and I would encourage all businesses which feel they are eligible for an Additional Restrictions Grant, to visit our website and apply now, the grants will be distributed on a first come first serve basis.”
