Brent successfully awarded Fairtrade status once again

26 October 2017

There is cause for pride and celebration as Brent has successfully renewed its Fairtrade Borough status, through the hard work of the Brent Fairtrade Network and Brent Council.

In confirming the renewal, the Fairtrade Foundation commended Brent on its achievements, in particular the creation of the Brent Awards for Fairtrade at Schools (BAFFTAS), which it claimed was a “fantastic approach to engage with younger audiences.”

The Fairtrade Network and Brent Council were also congratulated for their continuous support for Fairtrade through the number of events and activities organised and the cross-party and generous support from council members.

Councillor Eleanor Southwood, Brent Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, said:

“This is a fantastic accolade to have and I am really pleased that Brent has proven itself once again. A big thanks must go to the Brent Fairtrade Network and all their volunteers for their hard work to get this status renewed.

“Buying Fairtrade produce, from coffee and chocolate to beauty products and flowers, is an excellent way that we can support farmers and other producers in developing countries and promote sustainability in our everyday lives.”

The Borough has held this status since 2012 and it is reviewed every 2 years. This latest status will stay current until 2019.
