Sakonis Restaurant in Wembley hosted a healthier catering afternoon recently.
The event came about as a result of Sakonis working alongside our environmental and public health teams to achieve the Healthier Catering Commitment for London award (HCC).
The HCC is an award scheme that acknowledges businesses that promote healthier choices for their customers. Examples include; offering smaller portions, allowing the customer to add their own salt, offering water and alternatives to sugary drinks, having a side of vegetables/salad available.
The afternoon consisted of free diabetes risk assessments, dietary advice specific to the South Asian community, exercises to enhance your mental wellbeing, sampling healthier versions of popular dishes and an array of health resources and information.
Cllr Hirani lead member of Adult Health and Wellbeing also showed his support for the event, presenting Sakonis with their HCC award and commented: "It is great to see a restaurant showing commitment to supporting the health and wellbeing of their community. Type II diabetes and childhood obesity are growing concerns in Brent, particularly for those of South Asian descent. Below highlights how Brent compares to England."
Kavita Thakrar, Manager at Sakonis said: "It was a pleasure to host this event in association with Brent Council. Sakonis Wembley is working hard to introduce healthier options and alternatives on our menus. It was great to see the local community come together and be proactive to take control of their own health. We cooked some of our favourite dishes using healthier ingredients and were pleasantly surprised with how everybody enjoyed them."
We would like to take the opportunity to acknowledge all the businesses in Brent who have also achieved the Healthier Catering Commitment Award in 2015 and 2016: Sam's Chicken; American Charcoal Grill; The Sandwich People; Shambhu's Vegan Catering Service; Sakonis; Vale Farm Sports Centre; Walli's Chicken (385 high Road, Wembley); Manhattan Chicken & Pizza. Look out for the sticker in the window.
