Brent stands together with the LGBT community

14 June 2016

Brent is standing shoulder to shoulder with the world's LGBT community following the horrendous scenes from the Orlando nightclub shooting over the weekend.

The Rainbow Flag is flying at half-mast over Brent Civic Centre today as the Council Leader condemned all acts of terror and violence following the mass shooting in Florida on Sunday (12 June 2016).

"The senseless violence in Orlando was an attack on both the LGBT community and all of us who believe that what unites us is stronger than what divides us," said Cllr Muhammed Butt, Brent Council Leader.

"Brent is proud to be one of the most diverse places in the world and we have a long history of supporting and celebrating our LBGT community. The horrific scenes in Florida are an insult to everything we value and hold dear.

"At moments like this we must stand together with the victims, the wider LGBT community and all those who celebrate diversity and accept people for who they are."

The council is planning a series of events throughout 2016 which aim to help local communities to tackle difficult issues head on and discuss solutions. The first 'It's time to talk' event is focused on hate crime and takes place at Brent Civic Centre on Thursday, July 21.
