Brent girls' volleyball team took silver at this year's London Youth Games after finishing top of their pool by beating Croydon, Bromley, Kensington & Chelsea, Hillingdon and Camden and going on to beat Bromley and Newham before a close battle with Westminster resulted in a defeat.
Brent faced favourites Newham in the semis, who had beaten the girls in the London league twice this year. The match looked beyond them when Newham took an early 7-1 lead in the set but in a 30 minute spell Brent girls produced their best ever performance to take a 10-15 lead.
Newham rallied again to tie the score at 22-22. Against the run of play, the girls led by captain Francisca Darko surged again to win the match 22-25, and go through to their first ever finals.
The jubilant scenes that followed from the players, parents and supporters were as if the final had already been won and the girls were on top of the world.
Brent faced Westminster in the final. Brent started out stronger and took the first set 25-21 but Westminster fought back to win the final set and title 10-15.
Councillor Krupesh Hirani, Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing, said: "Well done to the Willesden club it's a fantastic achievement and what a journey to the final. I'm pleased to see these young ladies participating and achieving in team sports. They exemplify the fantastic young people we are so lucky to have here in Brent."
Cllr Hirani stressed the importance of staying active and commented, "Regular physical activity is one of the most important things you can do for your health whether that's through team sports like volleyball or simply walking for an extra 30 minutes a day."
