Willesden School joins Living Wage campaign

lIVING WAGE EMPLOYERA high-performing Catholic secondary school in Brent has become the latest in the borough to officially become a living wage employer.


The Convent of Jesus and Mary Language College, on Crownhill Road, Willesden, have joined the list of local businesses, voluntary organisations and schools who have committed to paying all of their employees a minimum of £9.40 per hour.


Celebrating their Living Wage accreditation earlier this week, Mrs Geraldine Freear, Headteacher of The Convent of Jesus and Mary Language College said:


"Receiving the London Living Wage accreditation is a proud moment for us.


"It shows that we're determined to support everyone working at the school, no matter what their role. It sends a message to our students that everyone has a right to a good standard of living; a message we hope they take forward through the rest of their lives."


Cllr Roxanne Mashari, Brent Council's Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Growth, Employment and Skills said: "The Living Wage is important to all types of organisations, and it's great to see more Brent schools receive their accreditations.


"The London Living Wage is the minimum income needed for someone to have a basic standard of living, reducing those under the poverty line in Brent. The Convent of Jesus and Mary Language College is one of the employers helping to push this forward.


"By investing in all their employees at the school, they are investing in local children and young people; ensuring they are given the best experience, as staff they interact with can work to the best of their abilities."


Brent Council offers an incentive package to the first 100 Brent organisations who receive their Living Wage accreditation, which includes a substantial discount of their business rates.
