Brent welcomes new Mayor for 2017-18

18 May 2017

The new Mayor of Brent for 2017-18, Cllr Bhagwanji Chohan was elected yesterday, Wednesday 17 May, by his fellow councillors.

Cllr Chohan was elected at the Annual Meeting of Brent Council and officially appointed as First Citizen of Brent at the Mayor Making Ceremony. The event was attended by councillors from across the borough, as well as representatives from voluntary and community organisations from within Brent.

A ward councillor for Alperton since 2010, Cllr Chohan has been a vocal advocate for encouraging residents to get involved in community projects across the borough.

After moving from Kenya to London, he worked as a bus conductor and booking clerk, before setting up his own grocery business which he successfully ran for 23 years. He has also volunteered for a wide range of organisations including the Youth Service, Ealing Community Race Relations Council and in stints as an interpreter and Special Constable.

The Mayor will be supporting two charities during his year in office:

  • Asian Women's Resource Centre - which assists women and children every year experiencing domestic abuse. The centre aims to prevent domestic abuse by helping women and children to receive essential, practical and emotional support in the future, so that they can re-build their lives.

  • The Akshaya Patra Foundation UK - which works to eradicate classroom hunger and facilitate childhood education.

The new Mayor of Brent, Cllr Bhagwanji Chohan said:

"I'm delighted to have been elected Mayor of Brent and feel honoured to represent the borough and our residents. Brent is one of London's most culturally diverse boroughs, and I'm looking forward to working with underrepresented communities across the borough to ensure that all residents are given a voice.

"I would also like to thank and pay tribute to my friend and colleague, the outgoing Mayor Cllr Parvez Ahmed for his great contribution to the office of Mayor."

At the ceremony, the outgoing Mayor, Cllr Parvez Ahmed, reviewed his Mayoral year and received a badge to mark his year in office.
