Question time to return for Local Democracy Week

3 October 2017

COMMUNITY figures and local politicians will make up the panel for a 'Question Time' event to be held at Brent Civic Centre as part of Local Democracy Week, which falls on 9-15 October.

Inspired by the popular BBC1 political television programme, the 'All about Brent' Question Time event, which returns for another year as part of the week aimed at getting residents more involved in local democracy to influence local decisions, will adopt an identical format, with Dr Jonathan Carr-West, chief executive of the Local Government Information Unit (LGIU) returning to emulate David Dimbleby as chair of the panel.

Wembley-born author, broadcaster and television producer Yasmin Hai and Harlesden-born social media star Dean Simon, aka Rants n Bants, will join local politicians and community figures to answer audience questions on local issues.

As with the popular BBC1 show, residents are asked to submit questions before the event to identify the main areas of interest for the audience, before one resident will read out their question to kick-start the discussion. Audience members will then be able to raise their hand at any point to ask a question or comment on the issues raised.

The 'All about Brent' Question Time event is set to be the highlight of a week of planned activities organised by Brent Council to mark European Local Democracy Week, which also includes opportunities to discuss issues with council Scrutiny Committee Chairs over a coffee, a debate among young people and a Be a Councillor session for anyone considering standing for election in 2018 for a political party or as an independent candidate.

Cllr Margaret McLennan, Deputy Leader of Brent Council, said:

"Getting involved in local democracy is really important as it's the best way for local people to have their voices heard about local issues.

"I am delighted that we are able to yet again host a number of events as part of Local Democracy Week to encourage more residents, particularly our young people, to become more involved.
