Andria Zafirakou, an arts and textiles teacher from Alperton Community School, has been shortlisted as a top 10 finalist in Varkey Foundation's Global Teacher Prize competition with an award prize of US $1 million.

Announced by co-founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates, Andria joins nine teachers from around the world to make the Top 10 list recognising teachers for their work in in helping those from disadvantaged backgrounds succeed against the odds.

Andria made the competition's Top 50 list in December last year, along with Eartha Pond from the Crest Academy in Neasden.

Cllr Muhammed Butt, Leader of Brent Council, said: "Huge congratulations to Andria for being a finalist in the Global Teacher Prize. It is truly a great achievement that she is chosen as one of the top ten outstanding teachers amongst hundreds of remarkable teachers around the world.

"To have, not one, but two teachers from Brent selected for this prestigious award demonstrates the incredible work teachers across Brent are doing in giving children and young people the best start in life.

"We wish Andria the best of luck."

All of the finalists are listed on the Global Teacher Prize website, where profiles on Eartha and Andria are also available.
