Shop local this Small Business Saturday

29 November 2018

This Saturday (Dec 1) marks Small Business Saturday, which aims to encourage shoppers to support local shops by picking up bargains nearby.

Brent has a fantastic range of small businesses that help make the borough unique. With this Saturday marking Small Business Saturday here, it's the perfect time to explore what's on offer.

To support Brent's small businesses and encourage residents to shop locally, 11 council car parks across the borough will be open to motorists to park for free on the 4 weekends before Christmas. Find out about free parking for shoppers in Brent this Christmas.

Cllr Shama Tatler, Lead Member for Regeneration, Highways, and Planning, said: "We have a wonderful array of small businesses here in Brent that all make a valuable contribution to the borough and the local communities they serve. I hope residents will consider supporting their local shops in the lead up to Christmas by bagging a bargain in a small business near you."

Tweet about where you are and what you're enjoying on your local high street on Small Business Saturday using the hashtag #BrentSBS for a chance to win a free meal for two at Sanzio's Italian restaurant (the winner will be drawn at random and the prize is to be redeemed Sunday to Thursday in December 2018).

Harlesden town centre will also be celebrating Small Business Saturday with category winners Tamariz Deli, who scooped the Friendliest business award, Rubio, for the best business interior and Mahogany Carnival, for the best celebration of culture and heritage category. Harlesden Business Association, founded and chaired by local shop owner Dulcie Joseph, secured the winning spot in the Best local event or festival category and Mrs Joseph went on to receive accolade of Community Champion of the year in this year's Pride of Brent Awards 2018.

The town centre will launch a new instore retailer event "Fashion and Bubbles" where visitors to the town centre can enjoy a great shopping experience on Dec 1 from 5pm - 7pm with discounts and entertainment within the popular fashion and retail shops within Harlesden Town Centre.

The event includes the Harlesden Festive Lights and Tree Switch-On festival in the town centre from 1pm until 7pm with the lights switch-on at 4:30pm. Activities include an unveiling of a Windrush dedication public mural, two new shop grand openings - Bays Bakery (57 High Street) and Requinte Brazil (12 High Street), steel pan band music from St Michaels and All Angels Steel Orchestra, dance performances from Mahogany Carnival Masqueraders and gospel singing from V2V Gospel Choir. It's organised by The Harlesden Festive Lights Cooperative (HFLC) and main sponsors Tropical Sun will be giving away free branded products to the public including food and drink beverages.

Paul Harrison, Community Brand Ambassador from Tropical Sun comments "It is a privilege for Tropical Sun to be supporting this year's Harlesden Community's festival lights. It is wonderful to see the community coming together to celebrate the festive season as Tropical Sun celebrates 22 years of its brand distribution so we will definitely be adding a bit of spice to the festival."
