Brent Communications

Are you interested in how local decision-making works, or is there something you'd like to change in your local community? Ever wondered what it's like to represent the interests of residents at a local council? Or how communities can work with elected representatives to take action.

If you're that way inclined, Local Democracy Week might be just up your street.

People who get involved in politics in their community often forge a successful career as a councillor. Or they even go on to become an MP. Local Democracy Week is your chance to find out if you're suited to a life or career in making your community a better place.

As part of Local Democracy Week, we're running a series of events from Wednesday, 20 October to Wednesday, 27 October. With the United Nations' premier Climate Change Conference, COP26, only a matter of weeks away, this year's national theme is: Protecting the environment: local communities take action.

So, all of our events in Brent have an environmental theme. Here are the main events during Local Democracy Week that we strongly encourage you to participate in.

Wednesday, 20 October – Friday, 22 October

Wednesday, 27 October

Climate Emergency Question Time – Q&A session-

This is a must-attend event if you want to find out how to tackle the climate emergency in Brent whilst cleaning up local air and living healthier lives.

We've already cut Brent's carbon emissions by 35%. But there is an awful lot more that must be done for the borough to get to carbon neutral by 2030.

For example, did you know that Brent households only recycle around 37% of household waste?

As part of this event, a team of experts will join Brent Councillors to discuss and debate:

  • how we can reduce the amount of rubbish we produce
  • our reliance on petrol and diesel vehicles
  • how homes and buildings in the borough will be more energy-efficient and powered by renewable sources

Please tune in next Wednesday to find out what we can do together to save our planet.

Brent Insight Day – Tuesday, 26 October

Are you starting out in your career and need some help completing a job application or revamping your CV?

If you've answered yes to any of the above, then you should look no further than the Brent Insight Day. In partnership with Newman Catholic College, Brent Council is holding a careers event at the Civic Centre during the October half-term.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Leader of Brent Council, Cllr Muhammed Butt, said: It's so important that people from all walks of life get involved in local decision-making. There are so many opportunities to make a positive impact in your community. Local Democracy Week is the perfect time to start doing that and will help us in our efforts to create a fairer and more equal society in Brent.

Cllr Krupa Sheth, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: "This year, we've arranged a series of events that look at how the decisions we make at a local level can make a real difference in tackling the climate emergency.

"We will look at what we buy in terms of food, how much rubbish we produce, or how we choose to travel – all things that can impact our environment. Please join us at one of the many events to find out how we can work together in Brent to do our bit."
