Drawing and Painting: A beginner’s guide to Illustration

Who is the course for?

This course is for absolute beginners to drawing and painting, who also have an interest in illustration. Also, those who remember the enjoyment of creating images but have lost the knock confidence, and also for those who have some experience and would like to extend and practice skills in a supportive atmosphere with like-minded people.

What will I study?

The course will follow a structured approach, with an emphasis on exploring and developing creative qualities while acquiring drawing & painting skills in an illustration context. Drawing will explore line, tone and texture while developing basic observational drawing skills in still life, landscapes and portraiture. Painting will explore the fundamental aspects of colour use and mixing, creating tones and shades, drawing with paint, creating the illusion of form and depth, while creating both imaginative and observational work. By the end of the course you should be able to do the following: Have gained or acquired confidence in both your drawing and painting skills with an emphasis on illustration. Become more knowledgeable about art forms and artists and be able to create drawings and paintings from initial ideas to finished artwork.

How is the course taught?

The tutor will do an initial assessment (an individual learning plan) to discover your starting point, find out what you want to get out of the course, take any previous knowledge you have into account, and plan how best to support you. They will demonstrate techniques, show inspiring examples and provide handouts to support your learning. You will learn by experience, demonstration, group work and practice! You will learn how to use a range of specialist drawing and painting materials and techniques.

The tutor is a professional illustrator and will explain how to follow a brief from conception to conclusion.

How will I be assessed?

Your progress will be reviewed by regular feedback from the tutor, discussions, self-assessment, group and peer work as well as the finished sketches, drawings and paintings.

By the end of the course what vocational skills will I obtain?

Observational and drawing skills – the ability to illustrate your thoughts and ideas. This course provides skills for the following employment sectors: The Creative Arts & Culture.

What materials do I need for the course?

You will need a range of drawing pencils (B4B), an A4 drawing pad and some basic watercolour paints and brushes.
